Entrance Door Buying Guide

Entrance doors provide access to your home, and are therefore a key focal point in terms of both aesthetics and security. It’s important to properly consider what you want from your front door, what your main priorities are, and use that to inform your decision to buy a door within your budget.

Every material has its own particular benefits and drawbacks. We strongly recommend shopping around and properly researching your options before making a commitment. While there are options to buy online, with a purchase that you use every single day (multiple times per day) it’s generally best to visit a showroom to see how your door looks and feels in real life, rather than just buying via an online store for the sake of convenience.

Maintenance & Longevity

Most entrance doors don’t need much maintenance beyond cleaning with a damp cloth occasionally. However, timber doors may require re-varnishing to prevent moisture damage and discolouration. You may also need to change the sweep on your door to prevent draughts after a few years.

A solid wooden door can be expected to last for over 100 years – as evidenced by the sheer number of Victorian, Georgian, and Edwardian buildings that still have their original entrance doors. However, timber doors typically require more maintenance to keep them looking good.

In contrast, uPVC and aluminium doors require less maintenance over their lives, but last several decades rather than a century.

Resilience & Security

Doors and locks provide a physical as well as psychological barrier and create security within your home. However, when the psychological barrier is not enough, you want to be sure that your door can withstand a strong or determined thief. While no door is guaranteed to stop an intruder, a good door should provide a barrier against both potential intruders and atmospheric issues such as storm damage.

Aluminium doors do not splinter, but do scratch and dent under force. They are also not recommended for beach-front homes where the salt water spray can cause oxidation and corrosion. Solid wood doors are excellent for insulation and are extremely strong. Any dents or issues on a wooden door can often be repaired rather than having to completely replace it.

If security is a major concern for you, it is important to consider the location of glass in your door. If you would like to add glass panes to your entrance door, ensure that there is no glass near the doorknob. If you prefer period designs with large glass features and sidelights, you should incorporate a double-cylinder dead-bolt lock to improve your security.

Aesthetics & Options

The look of your door is one of the most important factors for most buyers. While timber doors are typically more traditional, composite and uPVC doors come in a huge range of colours and finishes, with over 250 colour options with some materials. Aluminium doors also come with a huge range of colours to choose from, to contrast of complement your home.
