How to Reduce Draughts from Your Door

At this time of year, it’s important to reduce draughts if you’d like to keep your home warm and save money on your energy bills. A huge 35% of heat loss in British homes goes through gaps in and around windows and doors and through walls.

There are a few easy changes you can make to reduce your heat loss and get rid of draughts that make your home feel colder:

  1. Replace the weather seals around your door – if you have an older door (10+ years) the door itself may be sound but the weather seals might be broken. Remove your door and replace the sweep (brush on the bottom of the door) and the weather seals to stop wind from getting through when the door is closed.
  2. Check the glass panes – if you have glass panes in your door, the seals on those may be damaged. On older doors, you may also be losing heat through single-glazed panels. If that is the case, you may want to consider changing the glass for double glazing which is more heat efficient.
  3. Add a keyhole cover if you do not have one already – a keyhole is ultimately just a hole in your door, and definitely one that cold air can come in through.
  4. Add a letterbox flap or brush – if your letterbox is older, you may not have a letterbox flap (or it may have broken off). This is an excellent addition to prevent heat loss and draughts, and it can let you know when you have post too.
  5. Put a draught excluder at the bottom of your door – in some homes, the weather seal isn’t quite enough especially in particularly high wind or older houses. A draught excluder can be extremely helpful in reducing the amount of cold air that comes in.
  6. Change your door to a more thermally-efficient one – solid timber doors are excellent insulators, and a brand new door will have better weather seals and more thermally-efficient glass than older versions. Replacing your entrance doors can hugely improve the thermal envelope in your home and do away with draughts altogether.
