5 things you can grow in your conservatory in the cold weather ready for spring

Although we aren’t past the coldest months yet according to the weather reports, you would be surprised to know what plants do well in conservatories even in the cold. And it’s not just plants that can flourish in the sometimes cooler but sheltered parts of our homes; vegetables & herbs are fairly resistant to the cold too!Although we aren’t past the coldest months yet according to the weather reports, you would be surprised to know what plants do well in conservatories even in the cold. And it’s not just plants that can flourish in the sometimes cooler but sheltered parts of our homes; vegetables & herbs are fairly resistant to the cold too!

Here are the 5 plants that will thrive in your conservatory:

Olive Trees

The popular olive tree is not only the perfect accompaniment to the lux home look of the moment but also very versatile in both warmer or cooler conservatories. Pruning these plants is important to stimulant growth and if you can, pop them out in summer to make the most of the suns rays.

Citrus Plants

Also on the Mediterranean theme, Citrus plants are happy in temperatures just above freezing. As they come from the dry climates, watering doesn’t have to become a tedious core as they require minimal water. The most cold-sensitive citrus fruits are lime & grapefruit but if you have heating in your conservatory they will be fine.

Tropical Plants

Why not turn your conservatory to escape to the rainforest. Large tropical plants like Yucca trees & Cheese plants (not cheese producing plants sadly!) do very well in conservatories even in the chillier of months. It may seem like a bold move, but tranquillity is hard to come across in busy households & modern working life. So why not go a little plant mad, pop a comfortable sofa in and relax in what will feel like a tropical retreat!

Vegetables

You don’t need a typical greenhouse to grown vegetables & herbs – a conservatory can emulate the same thermal effects of a greenhouse meaning you don’t need a separate building to get green fingered and grow your own produce. Tomatoes especially do well in sheltered conditions with plenty of sunlight, prime conservatory conditions, just be sure to ward any signs of frost.  Herbs will require a little warmer than freezing temperate but are cheap & readily available from many DIY stores and super markets.

Succulents

Succulents & cacti are the very ‘in’ plant of right now. These low maintenance plants just ask for light and to not be overwatered to thrive. Simple!
