Chase Window products are available in a vast range of RAL colours and finishes. But have you ever wondered what RAL stands for? We’ll explain!
In 1925 the German government founded the “Reichs-Ausschuss für Lieferbedingungen” (RAL) – go ahead, try and pronounce it! In English this translates to “National Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance. ” The aim was to clarify and standardise technical descriptions and terms of supply of all kinds of goods. And in 1927 the German Reichs-Ausschuß für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung introduced the first RAL colour chart of 40 colours – RAL 840.
In simple terms, RAL is a coding system to define colours across the design industry – similar to the Pantone system used in printing.
Now manufacturers and customers could rely on a code to describe the colour they required. Various revisions were made to the collection and in 1961 it changed to “RAL 840-HR”. Consisting of 210 colours, it’s still in use to this day.
There is now a total of 2,328 RAL colours to choose from, which have evolved into several categories:
Architects, designers, painters and advertising agencies are celebrating 25 years of the RAL DESIGN system this year. Developed primarily for sophisticated decorative colour design, this collection contains 1,625 systematically ordered colour shades containing seven digits per colour code.
RAL CLASSIC has been the standard for choosing colours for more than 85 years, mainly formed due to industry requirements. Before this system existed, manufacturers and customers would’ve had to exchange samples to describe the colour. Constantly adapting to the requirements of the industry, RAL CLASSIC is currently made up of 213 colours containing four digits per code.
This is the first eco-efficient RAL collection based on waterborne paint systems. This colour palette is used for industrial and product design, comprising of 490 colours; 420 solid colours plus 70 metallic colours.
Using polypropylene to assure diversified applicability, the RAL PLASTICS palette is the colour standard for plastics. This range contains a total of 300 colours; 100 of the most popular colours from the RAL CLASSIC collection (RAL P1) plus 200 colours from the RAL DESIGN palette (RAL P2).
