Conservatories and Orangeries in Hertfordshire & London

A conservatory or orangery is a valuable, and highly desirable extension to any property. Not only does a construction of this nature afford additional space, it also creates a type of sanctuary offering a more open and airy view of the outside world. However, there are several main differences between the two constructions, and where one might be the ideal choice for a particular type of property, another may not be at all appropriate.

Bespoke orangery installation

Most people know exactly what a conservatory is and how they would benefit from having one. Mainly consisting of double glazing, a conservatory is often attached to the rear or side of a property and opens up into a garden area. Generally, its main purpose and function is to provide a space or retreat that is swathed in natural light, cool and airy in the summer yet warm and welcoming in the winter.

With a full and open view over the garden, a conservatory becomes a pleasant and relaxing place to read the paper over breakfast or to take afternoon tea. Many types of property, especially the more modern, are more suited to the addition of a conservatory. Depending on its overall size, it is possible to have a conservatory constructed without the need for planning permission.

An orangery is in some respects similar to that of a conservatory, especially in terms of its purpose and usage, except it is generally a more substantial type of construction. An orangery is best suited as an attachment to an older, stone built type of property, which either emphasises or further enhances the property’s unique character.

Subject to certain criteria, it is also possible to have a conservatory constructed without the need for planning permission.

House extensions, other than conservatories and orangeries, are generally considered on the basis of enlarging an existing kitchen, bathroom or bedroom.
