Sliding Sash Windows

Sash windows are sometimes known as Georgian or Victorian windows because they are inherently linked to those specific periods. Traditionally the front bays of old Victorian properties play host to original timber sliding sash windows as much as the multi-pane styles with timber bars and internal ‘ovolo’ finishing, are typical of the Georgian period.

Timber was once the only material available for the construction of these intricate windows but now due to technology and modern design methods, they are also available in uPVC or Aluminium Clad Timber should you be looking for maintenance free options.

There can be no other material that truly matches the beauty of wood. Where traditional sash windows are an essential requirement then the modern replicas, which can now be expertly manufactured using state of the art machinery, are usually far superior to the original frames.

Old wooden sash windows were notorious for rattling in windy weather, letting in draughts, dust and even water. They would also often stick, which would often make opening and closing very difficult. Occasionally a sash cord would break, rendering the window inoperative until a repair could be made.

Today, sash window replacements are manufactured to a very high standard from sustainably sourced timber, which has been kiln dried and treated with a proprietary preservative. Sash cords are now made from strong synthetic materials instead of the old hemp rope of old, and will last considerably longer. Lead weights are replaced with solid steel, and the sliding panels are fitted with brushes to eliminate dust and reduce noise.

The uPVC version of the sliding sash window is a complete replica, and functions in exactly the same way as timber with the weights and cords being replaced with spring balances. The main advantage of uPVC is the maintenance free feature, which has its appeal but falls short on character. Some period buildings, especially grade I and grade II listed and properties under conservation rule must be replaced with timber framed sash windows in order to maintain the original character of the property.
